Over the past few years several school systems have decided for one reason or another to change from using commercial software to using OSS in their schools. Because OSS is released free of charge, this has had the obvious effect of lowering their expenditures on software, but it also has had many other benefits which are not so obvious.
Whether you choose to switch only one application to OSS or go all out, you will save money simply because you do not have to pay for your software. On one end of the spectrum, you can save about $161 per seat by switching from Microsoft Office to OpenOffice.org.
