Olympic "sponsorship" controversy

General News Stay with me now. This story is a little bit off topic from Open Source per se, but I think it applies very well to the increasingly obnoxious nature of so called "intellectual" property.

On the news yesterday I heard a story about a fued between Esso and the Vancouver 2010 Olympic committee. Initially I was inclined to side with the Olympic people, but I've been thinking about it since then and I saw the commercial and now I am firmly on Esso's side. Can anyone enlighten me as to exactly copyright, patent or other IP law Esso is breaking by having a contest to send people to watch the Canadian team in Torino next year? Can the Canadian Olympic Committee really claim ownership over not only the "Olympics" copyrights and trademarks, but also anything and everything that could possibly be interpreted as being somehow related to the Olympics?

Is it time to start taking the Olympic committee people to task for purposefully misinterpreting Canadian law?

Hmmm... between this post and the article, the word 'Olympics' is
used almost 2 dozen times. Wonder if they're firing up the 'cease
and desist' machine....
